The little girl my teenager was babysitting for yesterday, decided that the fish needed to be fed. Since there were nine of them, they’ll need quite a bit of food, right? The remaining contents of the jar of fish food was dumped into the aquarium (fully half).
My daughters’ panic at the sudden realization that the fish would die was met with my (ill-timed) response of, ‘Oh well, we were able to enjoy the fish for awhile, now we can just flush them.’
Their response humbled me. “No! We have to clean the tank and save the fish!”
Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us to lay aside the sin which so easily ensnares us, and to run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Jesus endured the cross because of the joy that was set before Him!
I know the fish incident was a small thing; but to my daughters, it was important. So we “ran the race with endurance”. We followed through to the end…and SAVED the fish!
They reminded me how easy it would be to give up, give in. But God doesn’t want us to do that. He wants us to finish the race so we can forever be with Him.
